Arsenal ‘Best Placed’ To Land Atletico Star As Contract Talks Collapse

Their reporter Antonio Ruiz claimed on the show ‘Tiempo de Juego’ last night that Atletico have so far failed to agree a contract extension with the Ghanaian international.

Thomas’s current deal expires in 2023 but the La Liga side were keen on increasing the player’s €50m (£45m) release clause, which could be triggered by the Gunners or another club.

However, Ruiz claims an agreement to sign an extension has not been possible, with some at the club already resigned to losing the player. He says it is increasingly likely that he will be playing in the Premier League next season.

With that being the case, it is thought Arsenal will be the team who will be leading the race for Thomas, although it remains to be seen how they will finance the deal, considering their limited transfer resources.
