With crude oil as Nigeria’s major earner dangling between $8-$9 per barrel, Gen. Abacha still grew it to $9.6 billion by the middle of 1997, decreased Nigeria’s debt from $36 billion to $27 billion, reduced an inflation rate of 54% inherited from Ernest Shonekan to 8.5% between 1993 and 1998.
