Gombe dialysis center set for take-off

The dream of having a functional dialysis center to cater for people with kidney related ailment in Gombe state is gradually coming to fruition, as the state government is said to have reactivate efforts to equip and get the already built dialysis center in the state specialist hospital up and running.

According to information from the health facility the government has approved the release of funds for the purchase of the needed machines and other gears for immediate activation of the center.

With the absence of a functioning dialysis center in the specialist hospital and the lack of adequate machines at the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH) in the state, Bauchi, Yobe, Plateau and sometimes Kano states have always been the second health center and best options for families of patients in need of dialysis in Gombe.

It had been stated by Maternal Newborn Child Health MNCH) Coalition in the state that about 120 patients every week risks traveling from Gombe to Bachi and other neighboring states dialysis.

However, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Gombe State Specialist Hospital, Dr. Mu’azu Shu’aibu, has assured that with the recent actions of the state government in revitalizing the health system in the state, the tide is about to change. According to him the government has practically prioritized the rebuilding of the health sector for effective service delivery.

“We have recorded numerous changes in the area of infrastructures, equipment and manpower which we are also working on to improve the specialist hospital to a standard,” he stated in an interview in his office.

He explained that in the past few years dialysis was not the only services missing in the health facility: “We have been referring patients in need of dialysis to FTH which is also not fully capable of catering for the need. We also had issue with ultra-scan services, but today that has changed for good, as we now have 6 different categories of ultra-scan machines as well as echocardiography, that is a machine that checks the heart.

“We have procured 2 machines to kick-start the dialysis services and the centre would soon be up and running, the take-off was actually delayed by the EndSars protest that turned violent in Lagos, Abuja and other parts of the country. If not for the protest the supplier would have delivered the equipment and by now we would have tested the machines and the services commence,” the CMD stated.

He added that within few weeks the facility will be set and ready to offer the services. That is because the administration of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has shown commitment to end the misery and suffering of the people in the area of health care system and service delivery
